The new year

I've written about resolutions before. I generally do not believe people need a new year to change their life. For all I know, the 21st of April is a perfectly good day to make a resolution for yourself and try to stick to it. However, I have discovered why a new year is a good moment for people to start doing things differently. Let me explain.

Throughout the year, some fun stuff happen. You have birthdays, bank holidays, name days (thanks to my Latvian friends I know this is also a very good reason to crack a bottle or two) and so on. But at some point, someone decided to put a bunch of these celebrations at the end of the year.
Think about it, there's Halloween at the end of October - you drink.
There's Thanksgiving in November -you drink.
There's Saint Nicholas on the 6th of December (a day for kids in Belgium and the Netherlands to receive gifts if they have been good. As an adult it means you just get wasted.) - you drink.
And then comes the best of it all; Christmas - you drink.
If that wasn't enough, on the very last day of the year there needs to be a huge party because apparantly that's the only day that people want to put effort in organizing an enormous feast.

What I'm saying is that with all of that happening, there is no time to live healthy, or read that book you wanted to read, or run 5 times a week. So why not neglect everything you worked for in the past year, just to start all over again on the 1st of January. Brilliant.

Today is the 7th of January and I decided that I'll follow an online course on Google Analytics, just because (I subscribed and everything, it's for real). Heck, why not decide every month to change something, just a small thing.

I'm just saying, go for it if you want to, what's stopping you? The fact that it's not the first day of a new year?

The wishlist #2

The holidays are coming and there's no escaping it (especially since my colleagues at my internship seem to find it necessary to blast the most popular Christmas songs over and over again). I like the holidays purely because I have an excuse to drink ridiculous amounts of red wine whilst eating 4 course meals - not that that's any different from my usual habbits.

Christmas, especially, is also an excuse for me to ask my family for presents that I have wanted to buy throughout the year but, for mostly financial reasons, I hadn't had the chance to. So then there's me putting together a wishlist that's not too excessively long, with items that I actually really want. What mosly happens is that I get 1 or 2 items from that list, a bit of money and lots of books. I like books and money, so no problem there.

Anyhow, since I like to check out other people's wishlist to get some inspiration, I tought I'd share mine as well!

1. I don't have lots of winter coats, since I don't find it necessary, but this one I need in my closet.
Monki Matilda Checked Coat €85
2. My collection of black boots is kind of getting out of control and I know I should maybe switch things up, but let me do that after I get these.
Urban Outfitters Shellys London Meagan Platform Heel Boot €129,27
3. I got to smell this heavenly-awesome-scent by accident, just spritzing it on whilst hanging out at a perfume store. Glad I did!
Chanel Allure Eau de Parfum €96,95
4. Since it seems to become the protocol to do so, I have been going to the gym. However, I found out that my gym clothes were rather dated and really boring. So therefore these leggings, so I can look cool at the gym (apparantly that's what's expected as a girl).
Puma Progressive Graphic Long Running Tights €48,47
5. Of course, a pair of super cool running shoes go perfeclty with these awesome leggings. I'm so going to rock that gym after the holidays.
Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 31 €110
6. I love coffee and I love to drink it out of cool mugs. Whoever didn't see mean girls probably lived under a rock and should maybe reconsider his or her excistence on earth. A cool mug + meangirl quotes = perfection.
Etsy You Go Glen Coco Mean Girls Mug €8,28

Happy holidays, may you get drunk and eat too much!

The return

So I'm back from never-really-being-gone. Lots of things happened, but I'm not going to talk about that in detail here, you'll figure it all out later, as I decided to crack it up a notch and start actively blogging again. So here we go.

1. I'm single now.

No further explanation needed or wanted to be given. It happens, and it's totally okay.

2. I live in Amsterdam.

Yes, you read it right. I moved to Amsterdam about 3 days ago. The city of cute and small houses, the city of ponds and canals, the city of bikes (and let me tell you, there are a lot of those here). I always liked Amsterdam. It's not too far from where I come from - about 2 hours by train - and it's a great gettaway from the Belgian struggles of life.

You might think that the Netherlands are very similar to Belgium, but you're wrong. No need to be ashamed, the countries are almost equally as small and nobody really knows what's going on in these cultures. I'm not going to analyze all the differences between the Dutchies and the Belgians, but it comes down to the fact that I like the Netherlands, people-wise. They're open, loud, straight forward and funny. My kind of people!

(Fun fact about me: My mom was born in the Netherlands, which technically makes me half-Dutch, yay for me!!)

3. I study advertising

Finished the previous studies, which I talked about in older posts. Since I was so not ready for adult life and working and being all serious, I decided to do a post graduate in advertising (if you don't know what a post graduate is, look at it as a top-up year). Advertising is fun, although I'm not sure yet what my contribution to the field is. I guess I'll figure it out later. Or not. We'll see.

This is also the reason why I'm in Amsterdam - you see, it all falls into place now! For my fancy smancy advertising course, I needed to do an internship. And as I have the never-ending need of moving around, Amsterdam seemed like the right place to be.

Anyways, that'll do for now. The only thing you really should remember is that I'll pick up the blogging thing again, and I won't let you down, I promise!

The music edition #2

Miley Cyrus. If you haven't lived under a rock there's a big chance you have heard this girl's name cross the news, magazines or your news feed on Facebook. Despite the fact that she might have been a bit over the top and that whatever she has been doing was a bit unconventional (to say at least), you've got the give her some slack. Known worldwide as Hannah Montana, she definitely made her way into the 'grown-up' world and she did it with confidence.

Anyways, saying 'yay' or 'nay' to her actions, I love what she did with her new album. Bangerz is full of songs reminding me of the good old pop there was around in the 00's, mixed up with modern influences and yes, even country. My personal favorites are '4x4' and 'Adore You' (I must say, the lyrics to the first one are not the most meaningful, but hey, it's catchy).

So there, here's my confession that I am a fan of Miley Cyrus, and I'm not even ashamed of it.

The closer end

Soon the end of my studies will be near, and it scares the hell out of me. For three years everything was planned for me. I knew where I was heading and which path I would be taking for the following period. I still have 5 months to go and then I will be a graduate in European Business Management. Now I know I won't be the only one when I say that I have the feeling to know everything and nothing, and that 'the real world' is very frightening.

Isn't it weird that after all those years of studying, we still are not prepared for the real deal? After high school the biggest worry we had was what to do next, which study to do that would define our further life. I chose to do a 3-year bachelor abroad, being absolutely sure it would offer me experience and knowledge about other countries, whilst learning about business management. However, now that I am almost done, I do not feel like I learned anything. Ofcourse, I know the content of my studies, but that's where it ends. I had the luck to be able to do an internship which gave me great knowledge about how real companies go abouts. But still, the question of 'what to do next' stays. You never really know if the company you end up in is really what you want. You never know if what you studied is comparable to what you will do after you graduated.

I guess life is just a compilation of choices you make, and whether they're good ones or not.

The break

Everyone needs a break now and then. Whether it is in your relationship, at work or from university, things can get up to a point where you're just putting yourself away to satisfy others' needs.

Why is it that sometimes, it seems that other things are more important than your own happiness? How come it can become so easy for some of us to just keep on putting up with things that are not really worth it. Recently, I've realized that I have been ignoring my own needs and feelings, to satisfy others or to be able to finish whatever work I have to do for school. However, at one point, I just had to stop, look at myself in the mirror and tell to myself, out loud, that I need a break. A break from all the hectics around me, a break from not caring about myself. I decided to focus on me, and making myself happy again. Because really, if you're not happy with yourself, how you feel or how you look, how can it make the people around you happy?

It's been a slow process for me and I had to be able to take peace with the fact that I can't satisfy everyone, especially not when I haven't been satisfying myself for a while (that sounds wrong, you know what I mean). I started to do things that make me feel good again. Talking to friends about whatever is happening around me, getting drinks at random times of the day. Doing yoga for getting relaxed. Everyone has something that can instantly make them calm. People should do that more often. Take a break from reality and focus on themselves.

Love yourself before you can love others, they say. Right?

The celebrity crush #1

Every girl has her celebrity crushes. Amongst George Clooney and Tyra Banks, Zendaya Coleman has really caught my eye. You might know her from the Disney series 'Shake it up!' (I secretly still watch that show, even though I'm not considered as 'age appropriate'), but despite having the Disney Star stamp, she is rocking her own style and trying to display her personality, without pulling a 'Miley Cyrus' situation.

Talking about style, I just have to mention how this girl can go from sweet and girly to fierce and fabulous whilst easily pulling off a rock-ish style.

Photos seen hereherehere and here.

I've put  together some of my favorites outifts of her that I've seen around on blogs. I'm especially in love with the second photo in those georgeous pants, color-blocking all the way with the yellow top/vest thingy (consider this as my knowledge of fashion terms). And the hair just finishes the whole look. Also, on the two pictures on the left I am just adoring the combination of textures, patterns and interesting shapes.

Makes you wish you had the money to buy it all yourself.
